Ray Family Update from August 2015

Dear Praying Friends,

I am, by nature, a creature of habit. I prefer organization, consistency, and regularity in every facet of life. However, much of what goes on in the world is anything but habitual. Change, however, is not all bad. Sure, we (Independent Baptists) fight against change, in most cases rightfully so, but sometimes change is used of the Lord to encourage a healthy fear of Him. The Lord suggested as much in the latter part of Psalm 55:19 where He said, “Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.”

Truth is, every fleeting moment brings change. We lose time and opportunities that will never visit us again. Sometimes these changes are minimal, but other times the changes can be quite unnerving. In two weeks’ time, my wife celebrated a birthday (not telling you how old), my daughter Charity turned two years old, my daughter Sara lost her first tooth, my daughter Hannah began the process for braces, and my son Noah got his learner’s permit for driving. Some of these changes invoke more reaction than others, but they are all a reminder that time is swiftly passing us by.

Externally, I marvel at the departure by some from the mystery unveiled by the apostle Paul concerning the catching up of the New Testament church prior to Daniel’s seventieth week. Myself and Brother Doug Stauffer met with one man who formerly espoused the truth but has since put forth great efforts to convince believers of a post-tribulation rapture. Just as surprising is people’s willingness to defend those who teach such doctrines suggesting that the pretribulation catching away of the church is not a fundamental doctrine. This often comes from those who have been duped into believing in “the fundamentals of the faith.” Depending upon your list of fundamentals, the church’s departure prior to Daniel’s seventieth week is NOT a fundamental doctrine. According to the scripture, it is our blessed hope! Just another reason to be a Bible believer instead of a fundamentalist.

Daily Strength II

The second volume of our devotional book is in the process of being formatted and will be available for preorder before you receive next month’s prayer letter. It has been a great encouragement to hear from folks who have been helped by the first volume and we expect will be even more blessed to receive this second volume. This volume will cover subjects such as bitterness, confession, fear, forgiveness, giving, loving, modesty, prayer, reading and studying, and witnessing. If you are interested in receiving information concerning preorders, please write me at the e-mail address given below.

Construction Progress

Major construction for a church comes with mixed emotion. On one hand, it is a tremendous blessing and indicates some level of life within the church. On the other hand, it is filled with inconveniences and challenges that wear on those who are faithful, and it acts as a strong discourager for those who are newly visiting. In an effort to be wise with God’s money, we have undertaken more of this latter phase of renovations ourselves. Though we have certainly saved money, the work takes a great deal more time to complete. Part of this is because of the obvious time restraints people have due to regular jobs, families, etc.; the other part is because we do not want to have work days every week and burn out those who so faithfully invest their time to see the work done. The present phase will hopefully be complete in the next couple of months and we will pray for direction on how to proceed.

Our construction has created its share of challenges. Due to the removal of a drive-through in the driveway we need to add signage on Broadway to point people to the distinct parking areas. This would be a simple matter did it not involve cooperation from the city or neighbouring businesses. While this may seem like a small problem, it takes very little to harden the hearts of those who are lost or carnal. We recently had a lady so bothered by the parking and lack of signage that her heart was hardened before the service ever began. This is only one example but testifies to the reality that we need to finish this construction sooner rather than later.
