Ray Family Update from July 2015

Dear Praying Friends,

The scriptures seem to set forth a unique distinction between the ways of God and of the Devil. Of the Lord, the scripture saith, “Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known” (Psalm 77:19). On the contrary, the scripture says of Satan, “we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11). The Devil is not adding new weapons to his arsenal but reloading and reusing the same old weapons; nor is the Devil scheming new battle plans but reusing the ones that have been useful to him for thousands of years. God uses His word to expose the Devil’s weaponry and battle schemes for the whole world to see! How entirely helpful this is to those who know and study the scriptures.

Over the years, I have become increasingly awakened to the “coincidence” of increased Satanic activity immediately preceding increased blessing from the Lord. I sincerely claim some ignorance as to the amount of information at the Devil’s disposal at any given time, but it would appear to me that he has some level of awareness as to the coming blessings of God and increases his activity. Scripturally speaking, there was no time of greater Satanic activity than the years immediately preceding the cross of Christ—a time when “the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ” (Galatians 3:14). Still yet, the Jews are going to face increased Satanic activity toward the end of Daniel’s seventieth week—a time when the Devil knows “he hath but a short time” (Revelation 12:12).

I marvel that the Devil still possesses the element of surprise, but he does. Perhaps, it is my own lack of faith or my short-term memory concerning the truth of the scriptures. However, I never cease to be surprised when increased attacks from Satan eventually give way to increased blessings from God. Truth is, like most of you, I have much more bad news I could report than good news. However, instead of focusing on the attacks, I would rather praise the Lord for the reports I have received of folks receiving help from the ministry of Antioch Baptist Church and the wonderful joy of seeing one who had previously professed atheism come to know Jesus Christ as Saviour.

Thanking God for Work Accomplished!

Just last night, I sent the last weeks of devotions to be edited by Brother Stauffer. This means Daily Strength, Volume 2 is nearly ready to go to print. Likewise, we continue to make progress on One Book Rightly Divided and the songbook. I never dreamed of any of this. In fact, I went from desiring to be a Major League baseball player to wanting to be a teacher and coach to believing the Lord wanted me to preach His word. I could have never imagined it would involve all that it has involved. What a tremendous journey this has been!

Re-creation

It is no secret that I, along with many other men, struggle with excessive working. I feel as though I handled this much better in earlier years, but perhaps I am wrong. I had multiple men in the ministry admonish me to make sure that I made it a priority to take some time away every year. However, I continually deal with guilt over letting people down and not accomplishing all that I believe I should accomplish. To be quite honest, I have allowed this to consume me. I am reminded of something Pastor Reagan wrote in an article entitled Recreation as Re-Creation (OR) Come Apart Before You Fall Apart. He said, “As servants of the Lord, we cannot live for leisure as some do. However, God designed us to operate best with built-in times of rest and relaxation. God established a pattern for us when He rested the seventh day after creating the world. He showed man how to rest one day out of seven. But we do not listen.”

Only recently did I reinstitute a day off, but even so I have continued to take calls and tend to church business here and there. The truth is, I have hurt my family by not taking time off. My children are not getting any younger, my wife is not gaining time and strength, and I am not gaining any effectiveness by burning myself out. I constantly remind people we are running a cross-country marathon; yet, I pastor like I am running a hundred-yard dash.

Prayer Requests

* Pray for wisdom concerning the balance of work and rest.
* Pray for the Lord’s leading as I prepare to preach in a conference in Michigan in September.
