Good for Nothing Christians

Revelation 3:14-22

INTRODUCTION: Men have struggled for years to offer a good interpretation of the Lord’s desire for a cold Laodicea. Unfortunately, in our attempts, we have suggested some things that have absolutely no scriptural backing and actually promote utter carnality over a partial walk with God. This is just not right!

I. UNDERSTANDING THE GEOGRAPHY

A. The Three Cities (Colossians 4:13)

1. Colosse
2. Laodicea
3. Hierapolis

B. The Features

1. Hierapolis was known for its hot springs. These hot springs were thought to bring healing to the body. They also cleaned and dyed materials.
2. Colosse was known for its cool clean drinking water.

II. UNDERSTANDING THE HISTORY

A. Laodicea’s Riches

1. They were rich and they knew it (Revelation 3:17).
2. They were increased with goods (Revelation 3:17).

B. Laodicea’s Intellect

1. They were known for their medical advances.
2. The Lord alluded to this when He said, “anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see” (Revelation 3:18).

III. UNDERSTANDING THE TRUTH

A. Laodicea’s Deception (Revelation 3:17-18)

1. What they said (Revelation 3:17)
a. I am rich.
b. I am increased with goods.
c. I have need of nothing.
2. What they knew not (Revelation 3:17)
a. They were wretched.
b. They were miserable.
c. They were poor.
d. They were blind.
e. They were naked.
3. What they were counselled (Revelation 3:18)
a. To buy gold tried in the fire, that they might be rich
b. To buy white raiment, that they might be clothed
c. To anoint their eyes, that they might see

B. Laodicea’s True Condition (Revelation 3:15-16)

1. They were neither cold nor heart (Revelation 3:15).
2. The Lord preferred that they would be cold or hot (Revelation 3:15).
3. They were lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot (Revelation 3:16).
4. Christ would spue them out of his mouth (Revelation 3:16).
5. This reference points to the conditions surrounding Laodicea.
a. Hierapolis was hot—good for healing, and other purposes
b. Colosse was cold—good for quenching one’s thirst
c. Laodicea was lukewarm—good for nothing

C. Laodicea’s Need (Revelation 3:19)

1. A proper response to the Lord’s rebuke and chastening.
2. They needed zeal concerning their spiritual condition.
3. They needed to repent.

D. Laodicea’s Offer (Revelation 3:20-21)

1. Fellowship now (Revelation 3:20)
a. Christ stands at the door and knocks.
b. If a man opens the door, Christ will fellowship with him.
2. Fellowship later (Revelation 3:21)
a. Sitting with Christ in the Father’s throne
b. Even as Christ is set down with His Father in His throne.

CONCLUSION: What a shame! These Laodiceans had all the tools necessary to do something for God. They could have been used by God in any number of ways, but grew increasingly less profitable. In the end, they were good for nothing. The answer was to be zealous about something that mattered and repent.
