The Call to Remember

Jeremiah 2:32

INTRODUCTION: One would think it would be unthinkable for God’s people to experience memory loss concerning all that He has done for us. However, the scripture contains multiple warnings for that very behaviour.

I. ISRAEL’S CALL TO REMEMBER

A. Multiple Calls to Remembrance

1. The commandments of the Lord (Numbers 15:39-40)
2. The things which their eyes had seen (Deuteronomy 4:9)
3. The covenant of the Lord (Deuteronomy 4:23)
4. The leadings of the Lord in the Wilderness (Deuteronomy 8:2)
5. The Lord Himself (Deuteronomy 8:11, 18)
6. Their failures in the wilderness (Deuteronomy 9:7)

B. Main Call to Remember

1. The references
a. “Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (Exodus 13:3)
b. “[R]emember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm:” (Deuteronomy 5:15)
c. “[R]emember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee:” (Deuteronomy 15:15)

2. The consideration
a. What they were—slaves
b. Where they were—Egypt
c. What God did—redeemed them

II. OUR CALL TO REMEMBER (Ephesians 2:11-13)

A. The Call Stated—“Wherefore remember” (Ephesians 2:11)

B. The Consideration Explained (Ephesians 2:11-13)

1. What we were (Ephesians 2:11-13)
a. Gentiles in the flesh (Ephesians 2:11)
b. Without Christ (Ephesians 2:12)
c. Aliens from the commonwealth of Israel (Ephesians 2:12)
d. Strangers from the covenants of promise (Ephesians 2:12)
e. Having no hope (Ephesians 2:12)
f. Far off (Ephesians 2:13)
2. Where we are—“now in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:13)
3. What God did (Ephesians 2:13)
a. We are made nigh
b. By the blood of Christ

CONCLUSION: If you are saved, any problems you currently face could be resolved by simply refocusing your mind to reflect upon what God did for you through Christ at Calvary. Have you forgotten? Have you taken your mind and eyes off of Calvary? Have you become distracted? If so, why not make up your mind to turn your attention to Christ!
